Mock Interview

Tuesday, October 04, 2011
I just had my mock interview a while ago. I was really nervous. And my friend and I actually didn't know that we had to have three copies of our resume/CV. Good thing the professors/panel were kind and let us photocopy our resumes. My friend came first. While waiting, there was another person who I chatted with. And he taught me on the basics. Here's what I learned:

First knock three times.
Greet them a good afternoon and tell them your purpose for going there.
For giving out the resumes, hand it out to the girls first then the elder male.
Go near the chair, but do not sit yet. Wait for the interviewers to ask you to sit.

So, I applied all of those. But I didn't know that I should give my resume to the elder male first. However, my entry was good. Then they asked questions. They also acted as people from the establishment I wanted to apply to. Ms. Ricasio was the HR Manager, Mr. Flores acted as the General Manager and Chef Jocen was the executive chef. There was a time that I said that I wanted to be in the bar area. Chef asked me the recipe of different cockails. My mind went blank. For the last part, they also asked me what questions I had for the establishment. And their comments for my interview were:

I spoke too fast
When I'm nervous, I tend to speak really fast.  So, they couldn't understand what I was saying since I spoke too fast.

Mind my mannerisms
I was holding an envelope and I kept turning it around and doing everything and anything I could do. I should be aware of what my hands were doing.

Fix my hair
My bangs were not really in place. I'll probably use wax rather than gel.

Don't mention family
I was asked why I wanted to apply in Boracay even though I haven't been there. I mentioned my mother. And that wasn't good. It might mean that I was forced to be there rather than a choice.

Study all about the establishment I want to apply to.
I was asked what questions I had to the company. And I asked what type of restaurants did they have. Fail. I should have asked regarding shiftings, peak seasons of the company and more about the hotel. I should know a lot about the establishment. And the reason they asked if I had any more questions is that because it shows that I'm really interested to be there and I'm curious in the operations they had.

Study more.
I told them I wanted to be in the bar area. However, I didn't even remember any cocktail recipe.

But I was still happy since there were good comments. Ms. Ricasio told me that I was able to answer the questions well. And she also pointed out that I looked confident. Chef told me that it was good that I mentioned my experience in my old trainings. And I'm really happy that somehow they told me that I was a good communicator since I was able to answer the questions with confidence.

And that was the mock interview experience. I'll remember these pointers and hopefully I improve. \m/
